We were lucky enough to poach Kelly from a big fancy agency in a rainy city with a skewered UFO in the middle of it. She can rock a layout or frame animation like nobody’s business, but that’s only part of the reason she fits right in around here. Here’s an exclusive interview to help paint the picture:
1. What’s your superpower or your spirit animal?.
Super power would easily be the same transport ability as Hayden Christensen’s 2008 thriller, Jumper, so that I could go for a swim at a tiki bar, make a snow angel, and still have dinner with mom and dad in one day for Free 99.
2. What song or artist do you jam out to, but are to admit it?
I have a deeply secret love for all things Taylor Swift. Now that she’s on Spotify she’s my number one Private Session jam always and forever. If I have headphones in there is a 77% chance I’m listening to T Swift.
3. Who are your biggest design influences?
I’ve had a design crush on Timothy Goodman since my buddy and I stumbled upon him and Jessica Walsh’s 40 Days of Dating project in our senior level design class. Outside of T Goodman, I have always closely followed Aaron Draplin, Stefan Sagmeister, and most importantly the lovely entanglement of creatives that are my friends.
4. If you had a boat, what would you name it and why?
Life’s a beach, I’m just playing in the sand
– Lil Wayne (2010)
5. What makes for timeless design?
You’re going to want to get some left aligned, large, bolded Helvetica, a few bits of colored shapes + horizontal lines for pizazz, small grid copy, and a solid amount of white space then you’ll have yourself a happy little ditty of timeless design.
6. How old is the oldest pair of shoes in your closet?
Black velcro Vans – still hanging strong 10 years later.
7. If you woke up tomorrow as Beyonce, what’s the first thing you would do?
Call everyone I like to tell them how badass they are – I think it’d go a lot further coming from Kween Bey. Then walk around soaking up the mass amounts of awesomeness it would be to just be B.
8. What is your favorite and least favorite thing about agency life?
Agency life is generally a wacky, wild roller coaster ride of super highs and super lows. Which is both my favorite and least favorite aspect.
9. Ted Nugent, Kid Rock, or Eminem?
The Northern Michigander in me says Kid Rock all day everyday, but every other part of me points towards Eminem. Ted isn’t even in the running.
